Badge Worksheet for May

Badge-work for May
I was going through the badge requirements and came upon the climate change badge. As the first requirement requires Cubs to play the energy sleuth game, I thought I would send that out as our May badge worksheet. If they can complete the sheet before next week that would be great, but if not, just send it back when they do. You can also mark it off in Scout tracker.

GATHERING ACTIVITY:  Uses for a Computer

Materials:

Paper and pencils for each Cub

Ideas
Have the Cubs write the title “Uses for a Computer” at the top of the page. Divide the paper into two columns and label the columns “at Home” and “at School”. Draw this on the chalkboard to help them with spelling and layout.
Encourage them to list as many uses under each heading as possible. You could do this as a group or individually

GAMES: Coin Hit

Need: Quarter, sidewalk with sections and Playground Ball
Players: Two players
Each player stands behind a sidewalk section ‘facing each other’. They place a quarter standing upright in the sidewalk crack between them.
The first player will stand behind the line of the next sidewalk section and try to hit the standing quarter by bouncing the ball at it. If they hit the quarter they get one point and if it is knocked out of the crack they get two points.
The ball will bounce to the other player from across the crack. The second player will take a turn.
The first person to get 21 points is the winner.

GAMES: Find the Astronaut

Need: Astronaut picture or toy to hide
Hide the astronaut in the room and have the Cubs hunt for it. Hold up a rocket to give them clues as to how close they are to finding the astronaut. The higher you hold the rocket, the closer they are to finding the astronaut.
The person holding the rocket cannot talk at all.
The Cub that finds the astronaut gets to hold the rocket.

Game: Grandpa’s Footsteps

How to Play Grandpa’s Footsteps:
One person is chosen to the be grandpa. That person then has to face a wall at one side of the playing area, away from the other players. When the game starts, all the other players have to try and sneak up on grandpa without being seen or heard. At random times throughout the game, grandpa has to turn around. Any player he sees moving he sends back to the start. He then turns back around and you can start moving towards him again.
How To Win Grandpas Footsteps:
The winner is the person who reaches grandpa first and taps him on the shoulder. This person is grandpa in the next round.
Rules Of Grandpa’s Footsteps:
  • ·         All players must remain as quiet as they can when approaching grandpa.
  • ·         If grandpa says you’re out, you must go back to the starting line.
  • ·         Grandpa can turn around as often as he likes.
  • ·         If he hears a sound, it is advisable for grandpa to turn around.

Cub Masters Minute:

We take our bodies and good health for granted when we are well, strong, and feeling good, but injuries and illness can strike at any time. We should do our best to take care of ourselves by practicing good healthy habits and eating the proper foods. Each one of us needs to be strong and healthy in mind and body to be able to contribute to our family, community, and nation.

OPENING CEREMONY: Cub Scout Promise

CUBMASTER: (Show package of carrot seeds.) Inside this package are tiny carrot seeds. They don’t look like much because they are tiny and fragile. But if we plant them in good soil and we make sure they get plenty of sunlight, air, and water, they will grow to be big healthy carrots like these. (Show some carrots.)
Cub Scouts are like carrots, they also need certain things to grow, like good food, rest, and exercise. But Cub Scouts also need something more. They need to have healthy minds and spirits if they are going to be the kind of men we all admire. In Cub Scouting, boys can develop these qualities. They do it by following the Cub Scout Promise.
Please stand and join us in repeating the Cub Scout Promise

Recognition: Gold Medal Status

Materials Needed:
q  Platforms equal in height
q  Olympic-style music (optional).

AKELA:  Now it's time to recognize those Cub Scouts who did their best in achieving gold medal status. These Cub Scouts have practiced and sweated, and deserve recognition for their excellence, their diligence, and their accomplishments. We would like to call up our first medalists and their coaches-his parents. (Call boys up by rank or den and present awards.)
