GATHERING ACTIVITY and GAME:  Paper Airplanes

Materials:

  •         Paper

Ideas
Nice weather? Have it outside... Bad weather? Hold it inside in a gym or large space! Create and decorate paper-airplanes. Come up with categories for the fun.
·         Example: Who's can go the farthest? Straightest? Highest?
·         Can anyone fly it through a hula hoop? Do loops?
·         Make a 'bull's-eye' similar to what you would use for playing darts; can anyone hit the bulls eye...or the outer circles.

GAMES: Sunny Day Tag

You will need a SUNNY DAY for this game.
"It" chases free players and when "it" steps on their shadow... the free player becomes "it."

BADGEWORK: Foil Footprints

  Materials Needed:
  •          Towel
  •          Tin Foil

Place a foot sized piece of tin foil on top of the folded towel. Have the Cubs one at a time make a footprint by stepping carefully into the center of the towel. Save the foot print in a sheet protector in their Cub binders.

BADGEWORK: Airplanes and Their Cargo

  Materials Needed:
  •          Airplane Photos

Print pictures of different planes and explain their functions using the following link as a resource: http://science.howstuffworks.com/transport/flight/modern/air-freight4.htm or you can use the following resource sheets:

GATHERING ACTIVITY:  Continuity Balloon

Materials Required:
Balloons, blown up 1-2 per Cub
How to Play:
Give each Cub one balloon and instruct them to keep them in the air without letting them touch the floor. Have them work together to  keep both balloons in the air. Make the game harder by adding additional balloons. Point out the need to cooperate and work together to keep the balloons aloft.

GAMES: Newspaper Race

Two newspaper sheets required per player.
Each player must race to the turning point and back, stepping only on his newspapers.
He steps on one, lays the other in front of him steps on it, moves the first forward, and steps on it and so on.

BADGEWORK: Preparing for a Trip

Work together on worksheets to complete the Trailcraft Badge requirement #1.

THEME ACTIVITY: Phases of the Moon / Tides

Materials Needed:

  •  Worksheet
  •  Resource materials
  •  Small Water balloons half full of water

Discuss:
1.       The phases of the moon
2.       How the moon rotates
3.       The effect of the moon on the tides
4.       Different kinds of tides and how often they occur
Have the Cubs swing the partially filled water balloon in an arc, or spin with it to feel the pull of the balloon. Use this activity to help explain the pull of the moon on the water levels in the world.

THEME ACTIVITY: Seasonal Star Charts

Hand out and discuss the star charts of the 4 seasons. Teach Cubs how to read the charts.

Water Bottle Rockets and Launcher

Making and Launching a Bottle Rocket

Tools and Materials

  • Electric drill with 1/16-, 5/32-, and ¼-inch bits
  • One No. 4 size rubber stopper (1 inch long, 1-inch diameter at the fat end)
  • One 8-inch length of 3/16-inch (outside diameter) copper tubing
  • Bicycle pump with inflation needle
  • Heavy card stock
  • One 2-liter plastic bottle
  • Duct tape
  • One drinking straw, minimum ¼-inch diameter
  • Four 1-inch-square wood blocks
  • One ½-inch plywood board, 12 to 16 inches square
  • One ¼-inch threaded steel rod, 18 inches long
  • Four ¼-inch nuts
  • Two washers, ¼-inch hole, 1-inch diameter

Make the Stopper Assembly

1. Drill a 1/16-inch hole through the middle of the stopper.

2. Widen the hole by drilling the 5/32-inch bit about ½ inch into the top (wider part) of the stopper.

3. Insert the copper tubing into the 5/32-inch hole.

4. Push the inflation needle into the hole in the bottom of the stopper so that it feeds into the copper tube.

Build the Rocket

5. Make fins from card stock; attach to the bottle with duct tape.

6. Tape the 8-inch drinking straw to the side of the bottle (oriented from top to bottom).

Build the Launchpad

7. Attach square blocks to the corners of the launch platform (plywood), using quick-setting glue or 1¼-inch wood screws.

8. Place the rocket in the center of the launch platform and mark the spot directly below the plastic straw.

9. Drill a ¼-inch hole through the mark; insert the steel rod into the hole, and fix in place with nuts and washers.

Prepare the Hydro-Pump Rocket for Launch

10. Attach the bicycle pump to the inflation needle.

11. Fill bottle one-third full with water, below top of copper tube.

12. Push the stopper assembly firmly into bottle's mouth.

13. Invert the rocket, and slide the soda straw onto the rod.

Launch the Rocket

14. Pump air into the rocket. The amount of pressure required to fire the rocket will vary, depending on how clean the seal between the rubber stopper and the rocket is and how firmly the stopper is placed.

15. After several pumps, the pressure inside the rocket will be great enough to overcome the friction holding the stopper in place. Now comes the cool part, as the stopper releases from the rocket, and the rocket launches high into the air, shooting a trail of water behind it. Zoom!

Game: Hinges Freeze Tag

This is just a variation of Freeze Tag – but when each boy freezes, he has to be using at least three of his body “hinges” in the pose he makes!

Game: Healthy Plate Hop

Description of Game:
Before the meeting, prepare a list of foods.
To play the game, spread several Hula Hoops out around the playing area. (or use masking tape to set off an area)  Label each one -  Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Dairy, Protein. If you want to go with the most recent upgrade, have each hoop represent part of the “plate.”
Explain to the boys that when they hear you shout a food item, they should run and stand in the right hula hoop.
If the item you call out doesn’t fit any category, or would fit in more than one category, boys should stand in place.
Here are some suggestions for your list:
Apples, Apricots, Bananas, Kiwi, Asparagus, Broccoli, Green Beans, Cereal, Flour, Milk, Cheddar Cheese, Cottage Cheese, Hamburger, Pasta, Spaghetti,  Oatmeal, tortillas,  Yogurt.
Some tricky ones to use:  Butter, Potato Chips, Brownies, Walnuts, Refried Beans, Ice Cream
If boys disagree about where something fits, make a quick note so you can talk about it later!

Game: Limbo

How to Play Limbo:
Leaders hold a stick, and boys walk under the stick.  Each round the leaders lower the stick. When the boys can’t walk under the stick without a body part touching the ground other than their feet, they’re out.  The winner is the boy that can walk under the lowest stick.
OPTIONAL: Play music as you play this game.

Theme Activity: THE HAZARDS OF TOBACCO

Guest speaker

Cub Masters Minute: FAITH

In Scouting we use a compass to show us the way and a flashlight to light our path. In life we all need a strong moral compass and a way in which to light our trail through life. A strong faith in God and a desire to always have His spirit to be with us can provide these things for us in life giving us direction and knowledge on the path of life.

Recognition: Dimming Campfire

Materials Needed:
Electric campfire with dimmer switch, which Akela may operate unseen. Start with it dim.
AKELA: Tonight we have gathered at the ceremonial campfire to hear an ancient tale. It was once believed that a campfire had great magic. Of course it cooks our food, lights our way, and wards off wild animals, but the magic of this pack council fire is that it can light up our future! But only when we approach it after making a great accomplishment.
(Cub Scout) please stand? See how the fire burns only dimly when there are no advancing Cubs nearby? Now please come forward and join me at the fire’s side. See how it has begun to burn brighter now!
The fire tells us that you have been busy this month and have earned the following awards. (Present certificate) You have worked hard to be worthy, so the fire has given us a sign that you will continue to find great joy and success in Cub Scouting. You will soon be on your way to earning more badges.
You may now return to your seat
