BADGEWORK: Treating Fishing Injuries

Stay Safe While Fishing
·         Never go fishing alone. Always fish with someone else and, ideally, with two other people. If one person is injured, a second person can stay with them while the third person seeks help. This is especially important when rock fishing.
·         Let somebody know the location of your fishing trip, who you are going with and an approximate time you will be back.
·         Carry a charged mobile phone with you at all times.
·         Wear non-slip shoes and take care to avoid slipping or cutting yourself on sharp, rocky edges.
·         Wear lightweight garments worn in layers. Bulky woollen jumpers become extremely heavy and difficult to remove if you fall in the water.
·         Carry a first aid kit with you.
·         Be SunSmart. Wear sun protective clothing, use SPF30+ sunscreen and lip balm, wear an appropriate hat, seek shade where possible and wear sunglasses.
·        Take adequate drinking water.

FISHOOK INJURIES

When suffering from a fishhook injury, it is best to avoid removing the fishhook without professional assistance. Because the location of the fishhook, the depth to which it penetrated the skin, and even the type of fishhook, all play a key role in the method by which the fishhook is removed, a healthcare professional should evaluate and make the removal.
Following removal of the fishhook, it is important that you focus on wound care and ensure you keep the wound dry and clean, taking and prescribed antibiotics and follow up for doctor's appointments, as needed, for suture removal or simply to check for infection. In fishermen who suffer from complications such as peripheral vascular disease or even diabetes, the risks associated with fishhook removal go well beyond the injury itself and will definitely require follow up with a physician.

BADGEWORK: Properly Wearing a Life Jacket

Trying your life jacket
Try on your life jacket to see if it fits snugly. Then test it in shallow water to see how it performs.
To check your life jacket’s buoyancy, relax your body and tilt your head back. Make sure your life jacket keeps your chin above water and you can breathe easily.
Be aware that your life jacket may not act the same in swift or rough water as in calm water. Clothing and items in your pockets may also affect how your life jacket works.
If your mouth is not well above the water, you need a life jacket with more buoyancy. Older foam life jackets may lose buoyancy and may have to be replaced.
Life jackets should not ride up on the body in the water. If a wearer’s stomach is larger than the chest, however, ride-up may occur.
Before use, test your life jacket to be sure that excessive ride-up does not impair its performance.

BADGEWORK: Weather Knowledge

Materials Needed:
  •          Copies of “Weather Knowledge” information and worksheets for each cub
  •          Pencils
As you teach about weather knowledge encourage each cub to share one memory of an extreme storm they have lived through. Did they heed weather warnings before the storm? Discuss what they already know about weather.
Have the cubs file this worksheet in the “Outdoors” (Green) section of their binders.

THEME ACTIVITY: Watercraft Terms

Review the various types of watercraft and ensure that the boys can name each type. Use actual photos of the water crafts for the boys to identify.
