We have an astronaut in our midst! Sister Andersen is trained as an astronaut and agreed to come and share some of her knowledge and experience with our Cub group. She shared some really interesting information and taught us a great deal about space.

Space Exploration Badge:
1. We learned how space technology helps with weather forecasts, communications, search and rescue operations, map making and more.
3. We learned about the robotic arm on the Space station - the Canadarm. We will draw or make a robotic arm in Cubs to finish this requirement.
4. We learned about (and even sampled) the food they eat on the space station. How they get water, grow and store food, produce power and even how they sleep, exercise, work and relax. We will make a model out of food to finish this requirement.
2, 6, 7. We talked about each of these badge requirements and will finish them up in Cubs before we disperse for the summer.

Thank you so much to Sister Andersen for coming to Canada to our little group and sharing your knowledge with us. You have made it possible for us to complete all the requirements for this badge! Thank you Thank you Thank YOU!

Here are some of the handouts she shared with us:

GATHERING ACTIVITY and GAME:  Paper Airplanes

Materials:

Ideas
Nice weather? Have it outside... Bad weather? Hold it inside in a gym or large space! Create and decorate paper-airplanes. Come up with categories for the fun.
·         Example: Who's can go the farthest? Straightest? Highest?
·         Can anyone fly it through a hula hoop? Do loops?
·         Make a 'bull's-eye' similar to what you would use for playing darts; can anyone hit the bulls eye...or the outer circles.

GAMES: Sunny Day Tag

You will need a SUNNY DAY for this game.
"It" chases free players and when "it" steps on their shadow... the free player becomes "it."

BADGEWORK: Foil Footprints

  Materials Needed:
  •          Towel
  •          Tin Foil

Work together on worksheets to complete the Trailcraft Badge requirement #1.

THEME ACTIVITY: Phases of the Moon / Tides

Materials Needed:

  •  Worksheet
  •  Resource materials
  •  Small Water balloons half full of water

Discuss:
1.       The phases of the moon
2.       How the moon rotates
3.       The effect of the moon on the tides

Have the Cubs swing the partially filled water balloon in an arc, or spin with it to feel the pull of the balloon. Use this activity to help explain the pull of the moon on the water levels in the world.
