Materials:

·         Don’t be clueless code
Have boys crack the code to reveal the answer: “Clean and Green save energy at home, at school and on the road”

THEME ACTIVITY: Making Paper

Materials Needed

  • ·         Used paper – printed computer papers / old note book pages/ bills/ receipts [Note: Newspaper will lead to muddy-looking paper pulp and thus will affect the colour of the final paper you make.]
  • ·         A rectangular mesh/net made of steel/iron/nylon/acrylic – stretched and nailed over wooden frame [Note 1: You can simply take a picture frame, remove its backing and stretch a nylon gauze over it.]
  • ·         A blender
  • ·         Large rectangular tub
  • ·         Number of cotton rags and towels or sponges
  • ·         Scissors
  • ·         Optional – dried and pressed leaves and petals
  • ·         Starch – corn-starch or rice starch (as we used)

  1.         Soak paper until it is soft enough to blend into a pulp or mush using the blender. Add starch in the blender before emptying the contents into a large rectangular tub.
  2.        Pour the pulp into the tub and add more water if desired. You will likely need 2-3 batches of pulp mixed up.
  3.         Dip the screen down the side of the tub and under the bits of paper. Lift straight up out of the water so the paper particles are uniformly covering it. Allow to drip for a minute or two.
  4.         Turn upside-down onto an inclined table top without removing the stretched frame. Using the sponge draw all the excess water from the paper through the screen. Remove the screen and make another paper.
  5.         Allow paper to dry completely before removing from table top.

Badgework: What to do in  Case of an Emergency

Discuss with the pack the types of emergencies that they might see or have seen in their area. Discuss what to do in case of flood, tornado or lightning.

Badgework: Recycle Hunt

Have the boys go through an assortment of boxes, plastics and other odds and ends that may or may not have a recycle symbol on them. Discuss what the symbol tells them and what they can do with the item to ensure the resources used to make it can be reserved as much as possible.

THEME ACTIVITY: Draft-o-meter

Materials Needed

  •           Plastic Wrap
  •         Pencils
  •           Tape
  •           Scissors

PROCEDURE
1.  Cut a 12cm by 25cm strip of plastic wrap.
2.  Tape the shorter edge of the wrap to a pencil and let the rest hang freely.
3. Blow plastic wrap gently and note how sensitive the wrap is to air movement.
Drafts mean that air is leaking into or out of a building. This means either a loss of heat in winter or a loss of air conditioning in summer.
